REAR WINDOW “Adaptation”
One afternoon in London was rainy and sultry as usual. Paul, who has been devoted to photojournalism since the age of 20, lives alone in Chelsea and has a girlfriend whom he doesn’t like very much, named Scarlett, who is an actress. During a very busy photoshoot that day, he slipped and fell. As a result, he breaks his left ankle, and the lower part of the waist is put in a cast. Perhaps the most unbearable thing in life is to think that he can’t take a photo. Paul has to sit at home in a wheelchair for 8 weeks and rest all day. Of course, Paul, who reproaches his doctor for this situation, watches around in a wheelchair because he has nothing to do all day. Then, photojournalist Paul starts watching people from the back window of his apartment as entertainment while he can’t leave the house. It gets affected as he watches. He watched enough to recognize every one of the people living in the buildings seen from the backspace of the apartment.
As Paul is familiar with almost all the people in the flats, one day a couple in his flat opposite catches his attention quite a bit. However, the woman in the opposite building, who is sick and who fights frequently with her husband, suddenly Paul sees that she has disappeared. After a while, her husband starts to collect his things. In the face of this suspicious behavior, Paul decides to investigate the case with his broken leg.
“You’ve been watching people all day in that wheelchair and making up nonsense stories! I don’t think there’s anything wrong with the flat across the street.” says his girlfriend, Scarlett.
“No, I’m not making it up! Strange things are happening in the opposite building. The woman was in bed and sick all day. Then they had a quarreled. How can she leave the house on her own if she’s bedridden? That doesn’t make any sense. I think he killed her!” Paul replies.
“I really can’t believe you. I’m making plans for us! I came here to tell you how much I love you and want to live together and I’m with you in this difficult process, but you’re ridiculous! I’m going now!” says Scarlett reproachfully leaves the house.
Then, Paul’s nurse, Miranda, who comes every other day and says to Paul all the time, “marry Scarlett, you have found a very good and rich girl, and you keep complaining about her “, does not believe what Paul tells, either. While Marinda is preparing dinner for him, Paul suddenly calls out to Miranda like this:
“Look, Miranda! The man is carrying a different suitcase in his hand, the woman is still missing. The man carried that suitcase 3 times last night, I think he buried her inside. At least, you believe me, Marinda, I will prove it to you all!”
“You will get in trouble! Maybe they’re going on vacation or something. Couldn’t it be? Maybe the woman went before him. What do I know, to her relatives or something? You should forget about your neighbors and consider marrying that beautiful girlfriend.” replied Miranda in a weary mood.
“Of course, she’s a great girl, but she’s also a wealthy, successful socialite. Scarlett always wants me to go to galas with her. I don’t even have time for this. I’m always on the road, usually packing and often living in an unpleasant environment. That’s not the life Scarlett wants. Besides, we’re not talking about marriage. This isn’t our topic. A murder has been committed here; I say he killed his wife! I can’t let this thing go!” replies Paul angrily.
And a week passes. Scarlett, who can’t stand him no matter what he does, comes to visit Paul with a bottle of wine. Three weeks into his recovery, Paul is happier than ever to see Scarlett this time. After hugging her, Paul talks about the very strange incident that he experienced last night and his firm belief that this murder was committed, and he asks Scarlett to help him, and he continues his words as follows:
“Look honey, you have to believe me. Strange things happened again with the man on the other side last night. It was around 2 am. I noticed a change in a small flower garden in the courtyard. I think the man buried the evidence in there! He looked quite suspicious to me. One of the other neighbors’ dogs was constantly detecting a smell. The dog was constantly trying to dig up the soil last night. The man got angry with the dog. And on top of that, the dog was found lying dead in the garden this morning! I say the man killed the dog because he would reveal the evidence! Will you believe me anymore? There’s something in that garden for sure! I say he killed his wife; you don’t believe it! I want you to do something for me if you say okay.”
“WHAT. Did it happen?! This incident has made me suspicious now, too. Okay, tell me what you want, I’ll do it. I hope nothing happens to us.” replied Scarlett.
“Thank you, darling. When this murder comes out, I’ll be relieved and everything will be better, I promise. Now, I want you to enter that house while the man is not at home, the man does not come until 8 pm. I will spy on you from here. In any case, I will point you out. Be careful. Check the woman’s bedroom and I’m sure you’ll find evidence.” Paul enthusiastically described his plans.
“You want something crazy from me, you know? But I’m going to do it just to get rid of these thoughts in your head. I hope everything works out!” Scarlett replies worriedly.
Then, Scarlett finds an open window and enters the man’s house. She is moving anxiously towards the woman’s room; Scarlett sees that the woman’s ring and her clothes are still there. Scarlett, who thought that a traveler would never leave these items here and now believes in Paul, rushes out of the house to tell Paul what she saw, while the man enters the house. And Scarlett rushes to the window in a panic and tries to ask Paul for help. Meanwhile, Paul gets very agitated and immediately tries to tell him to hide. Scarlett turns right around, and the man starts attacking her. Seeing this, Paul immediately calls the police in a panic.
After this, the man, who also sees Paul and realizes his plans, first locks Scarlett in the bedroom and heads towards Paul’s house. Paul, who could not even get up from his wheelchair against the man who was advancing very angry, called the police, but before the police came, the man entered and no matter how much Paul tried to protect himself and tried to make his voice heard, the man took out his gun from his waist and shot Paul two shots. As Paul stands there in his wheelchair covered in blood, the man leaves the house. While in the garden, the police show up and catch the man there and arrest him. After the murderer is arrested, Scarlett, who doesn’t even know what exactly happened to Paul, rushes back to her lover, and sees that Paul is unconscious and covered in blood. Shocked by what she saw, Scarlett fainted on the spot.
In the end, it was too late for everything. Paul dedicated himself to solving a murder and died for it. Scarlett was mad with sadness. And it turned out that man killed his wife and buried some evidence in the courtyard garden and also killed the other neighbor’s dog. As a result of this, the man who committed so many murders is given a life sentence. On the other hand, Scarlett cannot find the courage to pass in front of that house again…
